Bruin Basketball Academy for Boys and Girls of All Ages Set for Nov. 10-11 at George Fox

NEWBERG, Ore. – All boys and girls from the 5th grade through the 12th grade are invited to George Fox University’s Bruin Basketball Academy, led by men’s basketball coach Mark Sundquist and women’s basketball coach Michael Meek, in the Wheeler Sports Center/Miller Gym on Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 10-11, from 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Saturday’s camp will focus on “Attacking Moves”, while Sunday’s session will concentrate on “Shooting”.  Players should wear shorts and a T-shirt or tank top (no jeans) and basketball shoes.  There will be a lunch break from 2:30-3:00 p.m. each day, with participants expected to provide their own meals. 

The purpose of the Bruin Basketball Academy is to use the education in the fundamentals and mental approach to the game of basketball as a tool to teach life skills, respect for others, self-confidence, goal-setting, and the leadership skills necessary to achieve excellence both on and off the court.  Academy drills include dribbling, passing, scoring off the drive and the pass, getting open, defensive skills, moving without the ball, fundamentals of goal setting, mental toughness, court awareness, teamwork, and coachability.  Games will be played for application of the skills that are learned.

George Fox men’s coach Mark Sundquist, the 2004-05 Northwest Conference Coach of the Year, is a veteran of 12 college seasons and has the second-most wins of any coach in Bruin team history.  Women’s basketball coach Michael Meek has a 57-7 record in two seasons with the Bruins, leading them to the NCAA Division III national championship game in 2012 while being named NWC Coach of the Year and D3hoops.com National Coach of the Year.  Current Bruin basketball staff members and players will also assist in the clinic.

The cost of the clinic is $50 for one day, or $95 for both sessions and nine hours of instruction and fun.  Checks are payable to “Bruin Basketball Academy” and should be sent to Mark Sundquist at George Fox University, 414 N. Meridian, Box 6171, Newberg, OR 97132.  Early registration is preferred, but players may also register at the door on the first day of the camp.
