George Fox to Offer Sunday Night Softball Clinics Due to Cancellation of August Camps
NEWBERG, Ore. – Two series of Sunday night youth softball camps, one for pitchers and one featuring hitting and fielding techniques, will be offered by George Fox University this fall in lieu of two upcoming August camps which have had to be cancelled due to planned renovations to the Bruins’ Morse Softball Field.
George Fox had camps planned for Aug. 9-10, but with the improvements to the softball field and the approaching delivery in September of the second child for Bruins’ head coach and camp director Jessica Hollen, the camps will now take place each Sunday night from Oct. 14-Nov. 18, a series of six nights each. Youth of all ages are invited to participate.
Sessions for hitters and fielders will run from 6:45-8:00 p.m. each evening. Offensive stations will focus on hitting and bunting, while individual coaching and video analysis will be used to break down and improve the mechanics of each player’s skills.
The Bruins’ pitching clinics are set for 7:45-9:00 p.m. each Sunday night. Pitchers will learn the mechanics of pitching, how to throw various pitches, and pitching strategies.
Directing the camps are Hollen, the Bruins’ fourth-year coach who was the 2012 Northwest Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Bruins to the NWC Tournament, their first post-season appearance in 18 years. Assisting her will be assistant coaches John Hollen and Dave Kellmer, along with current George Fox players.
Each athlete should bring his or her own bats, gloves, helmet, and catching gear. Players should wear athletic shorts or sweats / softball pants (no jeans), T-shirts, and bring tennis shoes (no cleats), as sessions will be conducted in the Wheeler Sports Center’s Miller Gym due to construction on the softball field.
Players may sign up for either or both camps, with a cost of $225.00 per person per camp. The registration deadline for each camp is Sunday, Oct. 7, a week before the first sessions. Registration forms along with a check for $225.00 made out to “Bruin Softball” should be returned to Jessica Hollen at George Fox University, 414 N. Meridian St., Box 6147, Newberg, OR 97132.
