George Fox to Host WBCA “Pink Zone”, NGWSD at Basketball Doubleheader on Feb. 5

NEWBERG, Ore. - As part of a busy Homecoming weekend Feb. 5-7, George Fox University's basketball teams will join together to promote breast cancer awareness through the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's "Pink Zone" campaign and celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day during Friday's doubleheader against Whitman College.

Tipoff for the women's game is at 6:00 p.m., with the men's game against the visiting Missionaries set for 8:00 p.m. in the Wheeler Sports Center's Miller Gym.  The women's game will feature the nationally-ranked and Northwest Conference-leading Bruins warming up in "Pink Zone" T-shirts that are sponsored by Newberg Ford, West Coast Bank, Technocom, and Lil' Cooperstown.

Ticket prices for the entire evening are $5 for adults, $3 for non-George Fox students, and $1 for seniors 55 and up and children 12 and under, with a portion of the proceeds from the game going to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.  "Pink Zone" T-shirts will be available for purchase, with all proceeds from the T-shirt sales going to breast cancer research.

During half-time of the women's game, there will be special competitions for girls and women, as well as raffle prizes (including "Pink Zone" T-shirts) given away throughout the evening for all girls and women in attendance. Fans are encouraged to wear something pink to show their support of the program.

The WBCA's "Pink Zone" initiative is a global, unified effort to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.  George Fox is one of many schools nationally that will be taking part in the campaign, which last season raised over $1.3 million, reached over 912,000 fans, and involved more than 1,600 participating teams and organizations.

George Fox athletics will also be celebrating the 24th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day by honoring all senior women student-athletes and athletic training students at halftime of the men's basketball game.  Medals will be presented to 20 outstanding women student-athletes and student athletic trainers at mid-court by Peggy Fowler, a George Fox alum and chemistry major who retired last year as the Chief Executive Officer/President of Portland General Electric.  She currently serves on the board of directors of PGE and several other U.S. companies.

The weekend of activities in the Wheeler Sports Center will continue Saturday with the presentation of the Homecoming Court at halftime of the men's basketball game, which begins at 8:00 p.m. against Whitworth University.  The women's game with the Pirates commences at 6:00 p.m.
