Hot off a 4-0 sweep at Pacific that has thrust them into the early
Northwest Conference lead, the Bruins will try to keep it going
against the Lewis & Clark Pioneers (1-7, NWC 1-3, 7th) in their
first home conference series this weekend … Lewis &
Clark was picked to finish 8th in the nine-team conference this
season, the Bruins 2nd to defending NWC champion Linfield …
The Pios dropped their first seven games of the season, including
three NWC games vs. Willamette, before pulling out the final game
of the series 2-1 … L&C is 8th in the league in batting
(.299), 3rd in pitching (5.62), and 1st in defense (.974) …
Parker Dane (.424) and Sami Morgan (.407) are the hitting leaders
for the Pios … Neal Finch leads the team with 2 home runs

Lead
Feb. 28 - George Fox 6, at Pacific 5
Bo Thunell slugged a three-run home run with two out on a 0-2 pitch in the top of the 9th to rescue the Bruins in their conference opener. Pat Bailey also homered, his 3rd of the season. Thunell finished with four RBIs. Chad Jones picked up the win by closing the game with four perfect relief innings.
Feb. 28 - George Fox 10, at Pacific 6
In the day’s finale, Shane Dalgleish gave Pacific little to work with, allowing the Boxers just four hits in seven innings of work while striking out three. The Bruins took control with four runs in the 4th on a sacrifice fly by Dan Winterstein, an RBI single by Seth Anderson, and a two-run triple by Todd Siler. The Bruins banged out 16 hits, with Kyle Kuenzi, Bailey, and Siler all getting three apiece.
Mar. 1 - George Fox 12, at Pacific 2
The Bruins continued to pound the ball as they collected 14 hits in support of Nick Bratney, who scattered four hits over six innings while striking out three and walking three. The Bruins scored one in the 1st, three in the 3rd, then put the game away with a six-run 5th. Kuenzi, Thunell, Bailey, Siler, and Dan Winterstein had two hits apiece.
Mar. 1 - George Fox 14, at Pacific 3
Thunell tied George Fox records for doubles in a game with three and sacrifice flies in a game with two while going 3-3 and knocking in six runs as the Bruins hammered out 15 hits in completing a sweep of the Boxers. Kuenzi went 3-4 with a double, a triple, and four runs scored, and Taylor Hunter was 3-3 with a double and four runs scored. Travis Schroeder earned the victory, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with two walks and a strikeout in five innings of work.
COACH MARTY HUNTER:
Marty Hunter (Linfield '84) is 35-17 (.673) to
date in his 2nd season as a college head coach. In his first
season, he led the Bruins to a 28-14 record, 2nd place in the
Northwest Conference, and a berth in the NCAA Division III National
Tournament. He had spent the previous five years
as an assistant coach at George Fox under Pat Bailey, who went to
Oregon State as an assistant coach. He was named conference Coach
of the Year six times in 12 years of high school coaching at Bend

Junior second baseman Bo Thunell of Canyon City,
Ore., was named the Bruin Athletic Association Men’s Athlete
of the Week and the Northwest Conference Student-Athlete Hitter of
the Week for Feb. 23-Mar. 1. He opened the
Pacific series by slugging a three-run home run with two out in the
top of the 9th for a 6-5 first-game win on Feb. 28, finishing with
a 2-5 game with a double, 2 runs, and 4 RBIs. In
a 10-6 2nd-game win, he ws 2-5 with a double, a stolen base, and 2
runs. On Mar. 1, in a 12-2 1st-game win, he was
2-4 with a double, a walk, 2 runs and 2 RBIs. In
a 14-3 nightcap win, he was 3-3 with 3 doubles, 2 sacrifice flies,
and 6 RBIs, tying GFU single-game records for doubles and sac
flies. For the week, he batted .529 (9-17) with
6 doubles, a home run, 6 runs, 12 RBIs, a 1.029 slugging pct. and a
.500 on base pct. Thunell is 1st in the NWC in
RBIs (18), sacrifice flies (2, T), 2nd in doubles (6, T), 3rd in
hits (19), 4th in total bases (28), at bats (41), 5th in total at
bats (48, T), 7th in batting (.463), runs (11, T), 9th in on base

Senior right-hander Shane Dalgleish of Sammamish,
Wash., received honorable mention for the Northwest Conference
Student-Athlete Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 23-Mar.
1. He started and got the win in the
Bruins’ 10-6 victory in the second game of a doubleheader at
Pacific on Feb. 28, working 7.0 innings and scattering 4 hits while
allowing 1 earned run, striking out 3 and walking none.
Dalgleish is 1st in the NWC in wins (3 T),
starts (3 T), 4h in innings (170), 9th in ERA (5.82)

records in the Bruins’ 14-3 win at Pacific in the second game
of a doubleheader on Mar. 1. While going 3-3
with 6 RBIs, he had three doubles and two sacrifice flies, tying
the records for a game in each of those
categories. The doubles record has been achieved
five times, the last by Pat Bailey at Corban on Apr. 10,
2007. The sacrifice flies record has also been
done several times, the last by C.R. Braniff against Linfield on
Mar. 5, 2006.
