BSB: CORBAN 6, GEORGE FOX 3 - Bruins Stymied by Former Teammate as Warriors Win

SALEM, Ore. - Trevor Winsor of Corban College, who played for George Fox University as an infielder in 2007, came back to haunt his former team by hurling seven strong innings for his first win of the season as the Warriors defeated the visiting Bruins 6-3 in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday afternoon here at Warrior Field.

Winsor (1-5) scattered six hits during his stint and allowed only two first-inning runs, striking out five and walking one.  He left with a 6-2 lead and Jacob Kopra finished up.  Andrew Snyder (0-1), the middle of five Bruin hurlers, was pinned with the loss when the Warriors scored three times in the 6th to break a 2-2 tie.

The Bruins jumped on top in the 1st when Michael Woo walked, Sam Stahl doubled him to third, and Brent Trask delivered them both with a double down the left field line.  The Warriors tied it with single runs in the 3rd and 4th innings, both runs scoring on infield outs against starter Travis Schroeder and reliever Tyler Richwine.

In the Corban 6th, Snyder walked Winsor and Luke Balbas to start the inning, and Steven Candeleria greeted reliever Adam Weber with an RBI double.  Kyle Kunkel then laid down a safety squeeze bunt on which both runners hustled around and scored. 

The Warriors added another run in the 7th on Steven Blum’s fourth home run of the season.  The Bruins picked up their final run in the 8th when Cody Curtin’s ground out to third drove in Josh Burch after he, Nate Hickok, and Josh Rapacz had all walked to load the bases.

Stahl was the only Bruin with multiple hits, collecting two of their total of eight.  Blum had three hits and Candeleria and Tyler Lake had two as the Warriors knocked out 11 safeties.

George Fox (20-11) returns to Northwest Conference action this weekend for three at Lewis & Clark College, starting with a Saturday doubleheader at 12:00 noon.  Corban (11-29) hosts Lewis-Clark State College, the No. 1-ranked team in the NAIA, Monday in a single game at 4:00 p.m.
