BSB: Schroeder Named to All-Northwest Conference Scholar-Athlete First Team

2009-10 All-NWC Scholar-Athlete Team

NEWBERG, Ore. – Right-handed relief pitcher Travis Schroeder of George Fox University, who helped the Bruins to an 87-41 record over the last three seasons and two NCAA Division III baseball post-season appearances, has been named to the 2009-10 All-Northwest Conference Scholar-Athlete First Team.

Schroeder, a senior from Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, played three varsity seasons for the Bruins, compiling an 8-4 record with one save and a 6.09 earned run average from 2008-10.  Primarily a middle reliever, he made four starts among the 36 games he pitched for the Bruins.  He finished his career with an outstanding strikeouts-to-walks ratio, fanning 65 in 85.2 innings while walking only 28.  He received honorable mention for All-NWC honors in both 2009 and 2010.  He also competed in intramural field hockey and volleyball during his college days.

A biology (pre-med) major and chemistry minor with a 4.00 grade point average, Schroeder graduated summa cum laude and hopes to enroll in medical school at the University of British Columbia this fall.  While at George Fox, he received the Alvin Roberts Memorial Scholarship for pre-med students, and was this past year’s recipient of the Esther M. Klages Scholarship.

Schroeder served as a teacher’s assistant in Don Powers’ ornithology class, and presented a research paper on the metabolism of hovering hummingbirds to the Society for Integrated and Comparative Biology in Boston.  He also was a guest speaker for chapel services at C.S. Lewis School in Newberg.

As a community service project with his George Fox teammates, Schroeder conducted ‘Miracle League Baseball’ clinics for disabled children in Vancouver, Wash.  For each of past two summers, he worked with disabled children for the Community Recreational Initiative Society in his home town of Kelowna.

This is the second year that the Northwest Conference has chosen a Scholar-Athlete team, recognizing top male and female student-athletes from each school in the conference who have excelled in the classroom, in athletic competition, and in the community.
