George Fox University Selects Chris Casey to Lead Revival of Football Program
NEWBERG, Ore. - Chris Casey, the coach who took over a struggling football program at Aloha (Ore.) High School and turned it into a state champion, has been selected to lead the newly-revived gridiron program at George Fox University, which is bringing the sport back in the fall of 2014 after a 45-year hiatus. Football at Fox: A Timeline
When George Fox (then Pacific College) began its intercollegiate football program, the team had to take a seven-hour steamboat trip to Salem to play Willamette University. That was 1894. More than a century later, a generous land donation, a landmark board decision and subsequent monetary gifts made possible the return of the sport after more than 40 years. Former Quarterback: 'I Can't Wait'
Alumnus Peter (Pete) McHugh has no problem recalling his favorite football memory at George Fox: homecoming 1966, when, as quarterback, he led the Bruins to a 14-0 shutout of the Seattle Cavaliers semipro team. Perhaps the best part: at halftime he presented flowers to the homecoming queen, his future wife Debbie Stewart.
