NEWBERG, Ore. – A special evening for George Fox University basketball fans who want to get an early look at the Bruin men’s and women’s teams for the 2012-13 seasons are invited to a “Bruin Hoopfest” when the teams practice this Thursday, Nov. 1, at 8:00 p.m. in the Wheeler Sports Center’s Miller Gym.
According to women’s coach Michael Meek and men’s coach Mark Sundquist, who are coordinating the event, fans can come to watch both Bruin teams as they engage in dunking contests, half-court shot competitions, and a couple of 12-minute inter-squad scrimmages. Free prizes for the fans will also be given away. There is no charge for the “Hoopfest”.
The George Fox women are coming off a 32-1 campaign that saw them go undefeated through the season all the way to the NCAA Division III national championship game. Eleven letter winners and three starters return from that team, which also won its sixth straight Northwest Conference championship with a 16-0 record.
The Bruin men went 11-14 last year and finished fifth in the conference at 8-8. Nine letter winners are back from that squad, including four starters.
The regular season begins for the men’s team when they host Colorado College on Friday, Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m. The women’s team gets its season under way on Wednesday, Nov. 21, at the University of Redlands at 6:00 p.m.
