MGF: PACIFIC INVITATIONAL: Bruins Start Spring Season Off with 6th in Pac Invitational
BANKS, Ore. - Getting the spring portion of their 2009-10 men's golf season off to a difficult start, the George Fox University Bruins finished a distant sixth out of seven full teams, well behind host and champion Pacific University, in the Pacific Spring Invitational Saturday and Sunday here at the Quail Valley Golf Course.
The Bruins shot a collective 327-235=652 over the two days of the tournament, 68 strokes off the 294-290=584, eight over par pace set by the host Boxers, who edged Linfield College's 298-290=588. Northwest Christian University was third with a 308-305=613, followed by Central Oregon Community College at 308-316=624, Corban College at 318-314=632, George Fox, and Willamette University at 328-330=658. Lewis & Clark College did not have enough entries for a team score.
Mike Ulstad was the leading player for George Fox, shooting an 81-76=157 to tie for 17th among individuals. Aleks Gabrio was next with an 80-79=159, tied for 25th, followed by Matt Fanning with an 83-85=168 (tied for 33rd), Kyle Wilson with an 83-86=169 (tied for 36th), and Kelton Johnson with an 87-85=172 (38th). Newcomer Joel Stude, playing in his first Bruin match, shot a 99-111=210 to place 43rd.
Max Bonk of Pacific took medalist honors with a one-under-par 76-67=143, one stroke ahead of teammate Sean Hamer (71-73=144) and Tyler Nelson of Linfield (73-71=144). Justin Ahrens (71-74=145) and Brent McKee (73-72=145), both from Northwest Christian, tied for fifth.
The next tournament for the Bruins comes Monday, March 15, in the Willamette Invitational at the Creekside Country Club in Salem, Ore. Tee time is 9:00 a.m., and teams will play two full rounds of 36 homes in one day.
