MGF: NWC CHAMPIONSHIP - Bruins Start Day in 7th, Finish There in NWC Tournament
PORTLAND, Ore. – After entering the day in seventh place in the Northwest Conference Men’s Golf Championship but within six strokes of fourth, the George Fox University Bruins improved their score -along with almost everyone else - and remained seventh as the tournament concluded Sunday here on the Heron Lakes Great Blue Golf Course.
Whitworth University hung on to win the championship after posting a two-day score of 309-309=618 on the par 72, 6,902-yard course. With the win, the Pirates earned the automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III National Tournament coming up May 11-14 at the Hershey Links and Country Club in Hershey, Pa.
The University of Puget Sound finished three strokes out of first place with a two-day score of 318-302=620. Linfield College and Pacific University tied for third place, Linfield shooting 310-312=622 and Pacific 323-299=622 with Sunday’s low round. Whitman College finished fourth with a 321-321=642, followed by Pacific Lutheran University at 323-320=643, George Fox at 327-322=649, Willamette University at 358-338=696, and Lewis & Clark College at 369-350=719.
Mike Ulstad knocked six shots off his Saturday score and led the Bruins with an 82-76=158, tied for 13th in the individual standings. Kelton Johnson was next with an 84-77=161, tied for 23rd, then came Aleks Gabrio with a 79-85=164, tied for 30th, and Kyle Wilson at 95-84=179, which was 42nd. Matthew Fanning carded an 82-98=180 for 43rd, and Joel Stube had a 114-100=214 for 50th.
Ryan Young of Whitworth was the tournament medalist with a score of 74-77=151. There was a three-way tie for second among Max Bonk of Pacific (81-71=152), Tyler Nelson of Linfield (77-75=152), and Marc Phillips of Puget Sound (80-72=152). Cameron Whittle of Whitworth was fifth at 77-77=154, while Christian Boudreau of Whitworth (79-76=155) and Ben Wright of Pacific (81-74=155) tied for sixth. Those seven were named as members of the 2009-10 All-Conference Team.
The NWC Championship marks the end of the third season of intercollegiate golf at George Fox, all under head coach Matt Beck.
