WARNER PACIFIC INVITATIONAL: Bruins Open Season with 8th-Place Finish at WPC Invite
PORTLAND, Ore. - In a tournament that was a last-minute addition to the schedule, the George Fox University Bruins opened their 2009-10 men's golf season, the third season in the program's history, with an eighth-place finish in the Warner Pacific College Invitational Monday afternoon here at the Heron Lakes Golf Course.
The Bruins shot a 328-338=666 in the 36-hole event, which was played on the par 72, 6,491-yard Great Blue course. The top four scores on separate 18's counted for the team scores.
Linfield College took top honors with a 295-301=596, with a second-place tie between the College of Idaho (309-308=617) and Concordia University-Portland (310-307=617). Corban College was fourth (307-322=629), followed by Northwest Christian University (323-312=635), the Concordia ‘B' team (317-332=649), host Warner Pacific (335-327=662), and then George Fox.
Newcomer Chris Lumsden led the Bruins with an 81-81=162, tying for 21st in the individual scores. Kyle Wilson was next with a 75-91=166 (27th), followed by Mike Ulstad with an 85-82=167 (tied for 28th), Aleks Gabrio with a 91-85=176 (38th), and Matt Fanning with an 87-90=177 (39th).
Linfield's Tyler Nelson was the medalist with a 73-67=140, four under par. He finished six strokes ahead of the 74-72=146 posted by Concordia's Johnny Miller.
The next event for the Bruins is their own George Fox Invitational, a two-day tournament Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 19-20, at the Chehalem Glenn Golf Course in Newberg. Tee times are to be announced.
