MGF: PACIFIC INVITATIONAL - Wilson and Ulstad Finish 3-4 for Bruins in Pacific Invite
BANKS, Ore. - Kyle Wilson climbed three spots to third while Mike Ulstad was right behind in fourth place, leading the George Fox University Bruins to a third-place team finish as the Pacific University Invitational men's golf tournament came to a conclusion Sunday afternoon here at the Quail Valley Golf Course.
Pacific (308-300=608) and Northwest Christian University (318-290=608) tied for first place, and the teams broke the tie by a card playoff, comparing the top four scores by the teams on the 18th hole. The Beacons were better than the host Boxers by one stroke to claim the team trophy. George Fox shaved 16 strokes off its first-day score and shot a 321-305=626, while Willamette University came in fourth with a 331-307=638 on the par 72, 6,518-yard course.
Justin Ahrens of Northwest Christian took medalist honors with a 73-69=142, one stroke ahead of Max Bonk of Pacific (74-69=173). Wilson shot a 78-71=149 and Ulstad carded a two-day score of 75-75=150. Other Bruin scores included an 84-79=163 (14th) by Chris Lumdsen, an 84-84=168 (17th) by Austin Rowland, an 89-80=169 (18th) by Kelton Johnson, and a 95-82=177 (22nd) by Matt Fanning.
"The guys had a great second day that built on the first day," said George Fox coach Matt Beck. "We had a new single day low of 305, only five strokes behind Pacific, a new low two-day total of 626, and new low scores for Mike Ulstad and Kyle Wilson. It was a great effort by a very young squad that each week keeps improving and jelling together as a team."
The next tournament for the Bruins is the Whitworth University Invitational at the Spokane Country Club in Spokane, Wash., on Sunday-Monday, Oct. 4-5. Tee times are set for 12:15 p.m. both days.
