NEWBERG, Ore. - Playing in one of the toughest regions in all of NCAA Division III, the George Fox University Bruins have placed two men's golfers among the top 100 players in Region 5 and thus have hopes of a strong showing in the Northwest Conference Fall Classic coming up this Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 17-18.
The Bruins' Mike Ulstad is ranked 88th and Chris Lumsden is 93rd in Region 5, which includes all NCAA Division III teams in Oregon, Washington, California, and Texas, according to Golfstat, the official statistics program of the NCAA. A third Bruin, Kyle Wilson, is close behind at 105th.
"To put that in perspective," explains George Fox coach Matt Beck, "the level of golfers in our region is much higher than in most others. We are ranked only 21st out of 26 teams regionally, but nationally, we are ranked 135th out of 260 teams, so to be in the top 100 golfers within the region is a great accomplishment."
Golftstat also has George Fox ranked fourth among Northwest Conference teams, trailing Linfield College, Pacific University, and Whitworth University. The Bruins hope to give those teams a run for their money at the NWC Fall Classic this weekend on the Great Blue course at the Heron Lakes Golf Course in north Portland, Ore. Tee times are set for 11:00 a.m. Saturday and 10:00 a.m. Sunday. The NWC Fall Classic counts as one quarter of the total score in determining the conference champion, with the NWC Spring Classic also counting as a quarter and the NWC Championship in the spring as one half.
