WHITMAN INVITATIONAL: Bruins 6th Out of 8 Teams after Day One at Wine Valley
WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Led by a two-over-par round of 74 by sophomore Kyle Wilson, the George Fox University Bruins stood sixth out of eight teams after the first day of the two-day Whitman College Invitational men’s golf tournament which began Saturday here at the Wine Valley Country Club.
As a team, the Bruins posted a four-player score of 318 on the par-72, 6,955-yard course. Whitworth University shot a four-over 292 to take a five-stroke lead over Linfield College’s 297. Pacific Lutheran University and host Whitman were tied for third at 305, followed by Pacific University at 313, George Fox, the University of Puget Sound at 322, and Willamette University at 334. All are members of the Northwest Conference.
Wilson’s 74 left him in a tie for sixth in the individual standings. Also counting for the Bruins were Mike Ulstad with a 78, tied for 15th; Aleks Gabrio with an 81, tied for 28th; and Austin Rowland with an 85, tied for 39th. Trevor Pielstick rounded out the George Fox group with an 89, placing him 44th.
Linfield’s Yutaro Sakamoto carded a five-under 67 to take a two-stroke lead over Christian Boudreau of Whitworth, who shot a 69. Corey Meyers of Whitworth was third with a 71, followed by Alex Fitch of Linfield at 72 and Dustin Hegge of Pacific Lutheran at 73.
The Whitman Invitational concludes Sunday, with the first tee time scheduled for 9:00 a.m.
