Spring Season - Schedule to be Announced

After earning two points with a seventh-place finish in the Northwest Conference Fall Classic Oct. 23-24 at the Juniper Golf Course in Redmond, Ore., the George Fox Bruins have put the fall portion of their 201-011 men’s golf season behind them and will turn their eyes toward the spring season.  The Bruins’ spring schedule will be announced as soon as the team’s playing dates and sites have been confirmed.

Points totals for the NWC teams earned during the Fall Classic: Puget Sound 8, Pacific 7, Linfield 6, Whitworth 5, Whitman 4, Pacific Lutheran 3, George Fox 2, Willamette 1, Lewis & Clark 0.  The Fall Classic counts as one quarter of the overall score toward determining the conference champion and the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament that goes with it.  The NWC Spring Classic also counts one quarter, and the NWC Championship Tournament counts double, or one half the total.

* Recent Results:

Oct. 23-24 - 7th of 9 in Northwest Conference Fall Classic

Dropping one stroke off their previous day’s score of 340 to shoot a 341 on Sunday for a final score of 681, the George Fox Bruins slipped from a tie for sixth to seventh place in the Northwest Conference Fall Classic  at the Juniper Golf Course in Redmond, Ore.  George Fox had been tied with Pacific Lutheran after the first round and was only one shot behind fifth-place Whitman, but was the only team unable to shave any strokes off its opening-day score.  The final day was played under adverse weather conditions, as a winter storm produced cold, rain, and strong winds around the area all day long.  Puget Sound maintained its first-day lead and won the Classic with a 320-312=632 on the par 72, 7,186-yard course.  The NWC Fall Classic was the final match of the fall season for all the conference teams.

Aleks Gabrio, who shot a 78 on Saturday and was tied for fourth, had an 83 on Sunday and finished 10th with a 161 to lead the Bruins.  Other Bruins in the tournament included Kyle Wilson with an 84-90=174, tied for 29th; Austin Rowland, who had a 97-80=177 to tie for 31st; Chris Lumdsen with an 89-89=178 to tie for 36th; Mike Ulstad with a 93-89=182, tied for 43rd; and Trevor Pielstick, with an 89-98=187 to tie for 48th.

BRUIN BITS ---

* Gabrio Named Bruin Athletic Association Athlete of the Week

With a 10th-place finish in the Northwest Conference Fall Classic Oct. 23-24 at the Juniper Golf Course in Redmond, Ore., Aleks Gabrio has been named the Bruin Athletic Association Men’s Athlete of the Week for Oct. 18-24.  The sophomore from Creswell, Ore., shot a 78 on Saturday on the par-72, 7,186-yard course and stood in fourth place in the individual standings after that round.  He carded an 83 on Sunday, a difficult day for the entire field of golfers due to cold, wet, and windy weather conditions, to finish with an overall score of 161.  The Bruins finished seventh out of nine teams in the tournament.

Gabrio is the first men’s golfer to win the Bruin Athletic Association award this fall.  He currently leads teh team with a 78.7 stroke average and a 66-37 record vs. all individual opponents.

The Athlete of the Week Award for both men and women is presented throughout the Bruin sports seasons by the Bruin Athletic Association, whose mission is to provide George Fox student-athletes with an outstanding athletic and academic experience and to strengthen the overall competitiveness of the Bruin athletics program.  For more information about the organization or to become a member, visit the Bruin Athletic Association website

- Bruin Athletic Association Men’s Athlete of the Week - (Oct. 18-24)

* Coach Matt Beck:

Head coach Matt Beck is in his fourth season with the Bruins, having initiated the men’s golf program at the school in the summer of 2007.  He came to the Bruins after four years as an assistant coach with the men’s and women’s golf teams at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore.  During his time there, the Boxers developed into a strong program that has been very competitive in the Northwest Conference, including three NWC women’s championships from 2004-06.  Beck hopes to repeat that success some day with the Bruins’ young program. Click here for the complete bio on Coach Beck.
