WEST REGION INVITATIONAL: Bruins 8th of 10 after Day One of Southwestern Tourney
GEORGETOWN, Texas - Taking on some of the top teams in the NCAA Division III, the George Fox University Bruins stand eighth out of 10 teams after the first day and first two rounds of the West Region Invitational Men’s Golf Tournament, hosted by Southwestern University, Monday here at the Berry Creek Country Club.
Playing two rounds of the three-round tournament in one day, host Southwestern holds a 12-stroke lead after shooting a seven-over-par 302-301=603 on the par-72, 6,600-yard course. Concordia University (Texas), which has been getting votes in the Golf Coaches Association of America D-III national poll, is second with a 310-305=615, while 21st-ranked Trinity University (Texas) is third with a 313-308=621.
Close behind are Millsaps College (309-313=622), LeTourneau University (310-315=625), Texas Lutheran University (320-313=633), and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (326-311=637), the latter also listed among “others receiving votes” for the D-III Top 25. Rounding out the field are George Fox (328-323=651), Willamette University (346-333=679), and the University of Dallas (343-352=695).
Aleks Gabrio posted the top score for the Bruins with a 79-82=161, tying for 33rd. Mike Ulstad shot a 79-83=162 and is tied for 36th, while Chris Lumsden had an 87-79=166, tied for 44th. Kyle Wilson carded a 92-79=171 to tie for 51st, with Tyler Dyck scoring an 83-91=174 and tying for 53rd.
Jack Cersosimo of Concordia is the individual leader after two rounds with a one-under-par 73-70=143. Chasing him are Lewis Peters of Millsaps with a 71-74=145, Cameron Button of Southwestern with a 75-71=146, and James Charles of Southwestern (76-72=148) and Bryce Myburgh of Mary Hardin-Baylor (72-76=148).
The third and final round of the West Region Invitational will be Tuesday, with first tee times scheduled for 8:00 a.m. Central time.
