WEST REGION INVITATIONAL: Bruins Remain in 8th as Texas Tournament Terminates
GEORGETOWN, Texas - Essentially treading water, the George Fox University Bruins shot a four-player 18-hole score of 329, 41-over-par, and remained in eighth place as the West Region Invitational Men’s Golf Tournament, hosted by Southwestern University, came to a conclusion Tuesday here at the Berry Creek Country Club.
After playing two rounds on Monday, the 10 NCAA Division III teams in the tournament played a third and final round Tuesday on the par-72, 6,600-yard course. George Fox finished with an overall score of 328-323-329=980, 72 strokes off the pace set by host and champion Southwestern, which had a 302-301-305=908.
Six teams were bunched within 12 shots of each others in the second-thru-seventh slots. Concordia University-Austin (313-308-306=927) and 21st-ranked Trinity University from San Antonio (310-305-312=927) tied for second. Texas Lutheran University (320-313-301=934) was fourth, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (326-311-300=937) had Tuesday’s best round and finished in a tie for fifth with Millsaps College (309-313-315=937), and LeTourneau University (310-315-316=641) was seventh.
George Fox in eighth was followed by another Northwest Conference member, Willamette University (346-333-334=1,013). The University of Dallas (343-352-374=1,069) came in 10th.
Mike Ulstad had the Bruins’ best score on Tuesday with a seven-over-par 79 and finished in a tie for 35th with a 79-83-79=241. Aleks Gabrio was one shot behind him and tied for 38th with a 79-82-81=242. Chris Lumsden carded an 87-79-87=253 to place 50th, while Kyle Wilson shot a 92-79-86=257 and Tyler Dyck an 83-91-83=257 to tie for 53rd.
Jack Cersosimo of Concordia pulled away from the field to secure medalist honors, shooting the best round of the tournament Tuesday to win with a four-under-par 73-70-69=212. Cameron Button of Southwestern was the runner-up with a 75-71-75=221, while Lewis Peters of Millsaps took third with a 71-74-79=224. James Charles of Southwestern (76-72-77=225) was fourth, and Bryce Myburgh of Mary Hardin-Baylor (72-76-81=229) was fifth.
