NEWBERG, Ore. – Hoping to improve upon their current sixth-place standing in the race for the Northwest Conference men's golf title, the George Fox University Bruins will compete in the 2012 NWC Championship Tournament this Saturday-Sunday, Apr. 21-22, at the Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick, Wash.

Tee times are set for 1:00 p.m. Saturday and 7:30 a.m. Sunday on the par 72, 6,939-yard course, with a shotgun start on both days.  For more information, visit the tournament website hosted by Whitworth University at http://www.whitworthpirates.com/sports/mgolf/2011-12/releases/nwctournamentsite

George Fox has collected a total of six points toward the conference standings by finishing sixth in both the NWC Fall Classic and the NWC Spring Classic.  Linfield College currently leads the standings with 15 points after a second-place finish in the Fall Classic and a win in the Spring Classic, Whitman College is second with 13 points, the Fall Classic champion University of Puget Sound is third with 12 points, and Whitworth is on everyone's heels with 11 points.  Pacific Lutheran University is fifth with nine points, followed by George Fox, Willamette University with four points, Pacific University with two, and Lewis & Clark College with none.

The Fall and Spring Classics each count as one quarter of the total score toward determining the conference champion for the season, while the NWC Championship Tournament constitutes the remaining one half.  The overall conference champion earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament May 8-11 in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

The Bruins finished sixth in last year's NWC Championship Tournament, which was also played at Canyon Lakes.  Mike Ulstad led the way with a consistent two-day score of 78-78=156 and finished in a tie for 10th in the individual standings.  Aleks Gabrio had the Bruins' best round on the second day and wound up tied for 13th with an 80-77=157, along with Kyle Wilson, who shot a 77-80=157.  Trevor Pielstick shot an 85-84=169, tied for 39th.  Other Bruin scores included an 88-84=172 by Chris Lumsden to tie for 41st, and a 101-92=193 to finish 48th for Joel Stude.  Ulstad, Gabrio, Wilson and Lumsden are all back to represent the Bruins this spring.
