NEWBERG, Ore. – A strong and consistent showing in the season-opening George Fox University Invitational has earned Mike Ulstad the Bruin Athletic Association Men’s Athlete of the Week award for Sept. 12-18, and honorable mention for the Northwest Conference Men’s Golf Student-Athlete of the Week.
Ulstad, a senior from Corvallis, Ore., carded a two-day score of 80-77=157 at the tough Chehalem Glenn Golf Course on Sept. 17-18, putting him in a three-way tie for fourth place. His efforts over the weekend helped the Bruins to a second-place finish in the GFU Invitational with a team score of 323-325=648, while Linfield College blistered the course to win it with a score of 301-292=593.
Ulstad’s score extended his fine play from the end of the 2010-11 season, when he shot a 153 in the Pacific Invitational and a 156 in the Northwest Conference Championship Tournament in his last two events. As the only senior on this year’s team, he will be counted by the young Bruins for veteran leadership on the links this season.
The George Fox Athlete of the Week Award for both men and women is presented throughout the Bruin sports seasons by the Bruin Athletic Association, whose mission is to provide George Fox student-athletes with an outstanding athletic and academic experience and to strengthen the overall competitiveness of the Bruin athletics program. The next action for the Bruins is the Pacific University Invitational on Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 24-25, at the Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks, Ore. Tee times for both days are 11:00 a.m. Also expected to compete are Linfield College, Whitman College, and Willamette University.
