NWC FALL CLASSIC: Bruins Shave 11 Strokes from Day One Score and Climb to 6th
PORTLAND, Ore. – Led by Kyle Wilson’s three-over-par 75, the George Fox University Bruins shaved 11 strokes from their score of the first day and climbed one spot to finish sixth as the Northwest Conference Men’s Golf Fall Classic, the final event of the fall season, came to a conclusion Sunday here at the Heron Lakes Golf Course’s Great Blue links.
After shooting a 322 on Saturday, the Bruins carded a four-player team score of 311 on Sunday, the third-biggest improvement of the day, for a final count of 633. Whitman College shot a 297 after a 315 the day before and finished third with a 612 score, and Willamette University shot a 314 on Sunday after a 327 on Saturday, finishing seventh with a 641 score.
The University of Puget Sound successfully defended its 2010 Fall Classic title with a 17-over-par 288-305=593, 13 strokes ahead of Linfield College’s 298-308=606. Whitman climbed two spots to finish third, followed by Whitworth University at 312-302=614, Pacific Lutheran University at 306-311=617, George Fox, Willamette, and Pacific University at 317-326=643. Lewis & Clark College had two individuals but no team score.
The lefty-swinging Wilson shot a 75 on the par-72, 6,491-yard course after an 82 on Saturday and wound up tied for 20th with a 157. Aleks Gabrio had the Bruins’ best overall score with a 76-78=154, tied for 11th. Also scoring for the Bruins on Sunday were Chris Lumsden, who had an 85-76=161 to tie for 26th, and Tyler Dyck with an 87-82=169 to finish 40th. Mike Ulstad scored a 79-84=163 and tied for 32nd.
Dustin Hegge of PLU hung onto his first-day lead to take medalist honors with an even-par 68-76=144, two strokes ahead of Matt Kitto of UPS, who had a 69-77=146. Scott Martin of Whitman (77-71=148) and Jesse Salzwedel of Whitworth (79-69=148) tied for third.
The NWC Fall Classic counts as one quarter of the score toward the overall conference title, with the Spring Classic as another quarter and the NWC Championship Tournament as one half of the total team score. The standings now have Puget Sound with 8 points, Linfield 7, Whitman 6, Whitworth 5, Pacific Lutheran 4, George Fox 3, Willamette 2, Pacific 1, and Lewis & Clark 0.
