NEWBERG, Ore. - A pair of George Fox University players - defender Peter Luginbill and midfielder Kyle Story - have been accorded honorable mention for the 2009 All-Northwest Conference men's soccer team as voted on recently by the eight coaches in the conference.
Luginbill, an academic senior and athletic junior from Caledonia, Ill., began his Bruin career as a midfielder and started there for two seasons, collecting four assists in 29 games. Moving to the back line this fall to become a key player in the George Fox defense, he appeared in 18 games with 16 starts. He was named the Northwest Conference Men's Soccer Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week as well as the Bruin Athletic Association Men's Athlete of the Week for Sept. 7-13. With Luginbill at sweeper, the Bruins posted shutout wins over Northwest Christian and Walla Walla during that period, the defense allowing nine shots total and only four on goal.
Story, a senior from Graham, Wash., tied for the conference lead in assists with nine and assists per game (0.47) with Andy Hyres of Pacific Lutheran. One of four Bruins to appear in all 19 games, he led the team with 18 starts, added two goals to tie for the team lead in points with 13, and was third in shots on goal (15) and fourth in total shots (25). He had a goal and two assists for a career-high four points in one game vs. Walla Walla, and had two assists in one game at St. Martin’s. He assisted on the game-winning goal in three consecutive Bruin wins, 4-0 vs. Northwest Christian, 10-0 vs. Walla Walla, and 3-2 at St. Martin’s. He was honorable mention for NWC Men’s Soccer Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week once, and was named the Bruin Athletic Association Men’s Athlete of the Week for Oct. 26-Nov. 1. Story finished his George Fox career with six goals, 14 assists, and 26 points in 62 games.
George Fox went 5-14 overall in 2009, and finished eighth in the conference with a 2-12 league slate.
Elly Bulega of Whitworth University was named the 2009 NWC Offensive Player of the Year, Andrew Stevermer of Pacific University earned the NWC Defensive Player of the Year, and John Yorke of Pacific Lutheran University, which finished a strong second to Whitworth in the conference standings, was voted NWC Coach of the Year.
