BAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Goalkeeper Baker Wins First Weekly Athletic Honor

NEWBERG, Ore. - In his first varsity collegiate game, goalkeeper Jacob Baker posted a shutout in a 2-0 win over Oregon Tech on Sept. 2, earning him the first Bruin Athletic Association Men’s Athlete of the Week award for the week of Aug. 29-Sept. 4 and honorable mention for the Northwest Conference Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.

Baker, a junior from Newberg, Ore., and the son of George Fox president Dr. Robin Baker, was up to the task of stopping the Owls as he faced 18 total shots and seven on goal, recording seven saves.  He got the start in place of returning keeper Elliott Davis, who was nursing a minor injury.  The win ended a 20-game winless streak for the Bruins, during which they had gone 0-18-2.

In addition to Baker’s honor, rookie forward Luke Hammer (Fr., Roseburg, Ore.) received honorable mention for the NWC Men’s Soccer Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week as he scored the Bruins’ first goal and assisted on the second in the win over the Owls.

The Athlete of the Week Award for both men and women is presented throughout the Bruin sports seasons by the Bruin Athletic Association, whose mission is to provide George Fox student-athletes with an outstanding athletic and academic experience and to strengthen the overall competitiveness of the Bruin athletics program.  For more information about the organization or to become a member, visit the Bruin Athletic Association website.
