ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT: Bruins’ Reed Named D-III Academic All-District VIII

NEWBERG, Ore. – A stalwart for George Fox University both on the pitch and in the classroom, the Bruins’ Christian Reed has been named to the 2011 Capital One / CoSIDA NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Academic All-District VIII Second Team as voted on by district members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Reed, a sophomore defender from Tulsa, Okla., has a 3.93 grade point average as an Arts major at George Fox, an institution of higher education annually recognized as one of the nation’s top Christian colleges.   On the field, he has been a two-year starter for the Bruins, this fall appearing in 16 games with 15 starts.  A versatile player, he not only anchored the back line but found opportunities to take 16 shots on offense, with five shots on goal.  He scored his only two goals of the season in a 3-0 win at Simpson University (Calif.), and also had an assist in a 3-2 setback vs. Willamette University.

As a freshman in 2010, Reed played up front for the Bruins after coming to the program as a defender from Jenks High School in Tulsa.  He led the team in shots (33) and shots on goal (10) while scoring one goal.  He is the first Bruin to earn Academic All-District honors since Zach Sanders in 2009.

This is the second year for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program to be sponsored by Capital One.  New this year to the program is a breakdown of the former “College Division”, which lumped all schools outside of the NCAA Division I into one category, into separate teams for Division II, Division III, and a new College Division which includes NAIA and other four-year organizations, Canadian teams, and junior and community colleges.

District VIII of CoSIDA consists of all sports information directors and other college sports media relations personnel from Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, California, Hawai’i, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and Idaho.  Academic All-Americans are selected by the CoSIDA Academic All-America Committee from First Team members of the eight districts.
