TRINITY LUTHERAN 6, GEORGE FOX 3: Bruins Score 3 Times but Doubled Up by Eagles
TACOMA, Wash. - Breaking out of an early-season scoring drought, the George Fox University Bruins erupted for their first three goals of the season, but were unable to stop a potent Trinity Lutheran College offense as the Eagles made off with a 6-3 win in non-conference men’s soccer action Sunday afternoon here at the University of Puget Sound’s Baker Field.
The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 25 minutes. Cesar Gonzalez crossed from the right to the back post to David Durant, who headed it home just 3:52 into the game to open the salvo. Steve Torres chipped in a goal from 20 yards out at the 23:17 mark with an assist from Armend Makolli, and Carlos Camacho tapped in an unassisted score at 25:56.
The Bruins finally got on the board when Sawyer Meek got a breakaway and beat Trinity Lutheran goalie Roman Vazquez to the far post from 12 yards out at 27:43, cutting the deficit to 3-1, which was the halftime score.
Makolli passed to Tom Hering, who beat George Fox keeper Elliott Davis one-on-one to make it 4-1 at the 55:51 point of the second half. The Bruins answered 10 minutes later when Kane Ransom crossed into the middle to Myles Sorokovsky, who headed it home to make it 4-2.
Consecutive unassisted scores by the Eagles’ Sekou Rolland at 73:42 and by Makolli at 84:06 built the advantage to 6-2. The Bruins tacked on a final goal 45 seconds later when Joseph Byrnes lofted a 35-yarder over Vazquez for the final three-goal margin.
Trinity Lutheran peppered 21 shots in the contest, 12 on goal, with Davis securing six saves for the Bruins. George Fox managed nine shots, four on goal with three scores, leaving only one save for Vazquez. TLC held a slight 4-3 edge in corner kicks, while the Bruins had double the number of fouls as the Eagles, 14-7.
