Lumsden, Hammer Share Bruin Weekly Award; Hammer NWC Soccer Offensive Athlete
NEWBERG, Ore. – A “hat trick” by soccer player Luke Hammer and a record-setting tournament by golfer Chris Lumsden have earned them George Fox University Bruin Men’s Co-Athletes of the Week honors for Oct. 1-7, while Hammer was also named the Northwest Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week.
Hammer, a sophomore forward from Roseburg, Ore., scored three goals in a game for the first time in his college career in leading the Bruins to a 5-3 win over the Pacific Boxers on Sept.30 at the Austin Sports Complex. It was the team’s first win ever on the new field, which opened on Sept.2, 2010. His first goal at 12:50 in the first half off a feed from Luke Dickens gave the Bruins an early 1-0 lead. His second goal, a sliding kick over the Pacific keeper after a cross from Andrew Van der Werff, made it 2-1 at the 31:20 mark. In the second half, his tap-in following a deflected shot by Myles Sorokovsky made it 4-2 and turned out to be the eventual winning goal.
Hammer’s big game lifted him into a tie for fourth in the NWC in goals scored (4) and tied for ninth in points (9). He is also tied for fourth in shots on goal (14) and for seventh in total shots (26).
Lumsden, a senior from Bonney Lake, Wash., finished second by three strokes to medalist Kyle Rudnicki of Whitworth in the Whitman Invitational at the Wine Valley Golf Course in Walla, Wash., on Sept. 30-Oct. 1. He shot a two-day score of 70-71=141, three-under-par, on the par-72, 6,760-yard course. His 70 on Sunday broke the Bruins’ 18-hole record of 71 set by Kyle Wilson on Sept. 27, 2009, on the second day of the Pacific Invitational at the Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks, Ore. Wilson shot a 78-71=149 in that tournament to set the Bruins’ 36-hole record, but Lumsden shattered that with his 141 at Wine Valley, the first time a Bruin has finished a two-day tournament with a sub-par score.
Lumsden opened the season by winning the Linfield Invitational on Sept. 27 at the Michelbook Country Club in McMinnville, Ore., earning NWC Men’s Golf-Student Athlete of the Week honors for Sept. 24-30 as well at Bruin The George Fox University Bruin Athlete of the Week Award for both men and women is presented throughout the sports seasons to recognize and honor outstanding athletic achievements and records by Bruin student-athletes.
