PUGET SOUND 6, GEORGE FOX 3: Bruins Win at Top but Bottom Out Against Loggers
NEWBERG, Ore. – Despite picking up wins at No. 1 doubles and the top two singles positions, the George Fox University Bruins could do nothing with the rest of the University of Puget Sound lineup and dropped a 6-3 decision to the Loggers in a Northwest Conference men’s tennis match Friday afternoon here at the GFU campus courts.
With both teams seeking their first win of the season, the Bruins
started off on the right foot with an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles,
Ralf Schulz and Stefan Lagielski cutting down the Loggers’
Jamie Hosmer and Nick Kelley. At No. 2, the
Loggers’ Alex Harrison and Carl Larson pulled out an 8-6 win
over Scott Barnett and Ross Budreau, while at No. 3, Scooter Sabel
and Zac Peller doubled up the Bruins’ Garrett Thompson and
Nick Jenness 8-4.
Barnett and Lagielski posted singles victories for the Bruins at
No. 1 and No. 2 respectively, Barnett winning a tight one over
Hosmer 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) and Lagielski downing Harrison 6-2,
6-3. The Loggers took the remaining four
singles, however, as Kelley upended Schulz 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3; Sabel
jolted Jenness 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4; Peller beat Budreau 7-5, 6-2 at
No. 5; and George Murphy topped Thompson 6-4, 6-0 at No. 6.
George Fox (0-8, NWC 0-8) hosts Willamette University Saturday in
a match that has been moved from the GFU courts at 12:00 noon to
the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton, Ore., at 1:00 p.m.
due to expected steady rain. Puget Sound (1-8,
NWC 1-8) visits Lewis & Clark College Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
