ALL-CONFERENCE: Bruins’ Barnett Named Second Team All-NWC

2009 All-Northwest Conference Men's Tennis Team

NEWBERG, Ore. – In an otherwise disappointing men’s tennis season, Scott Barnett provided a bright spot for the George Fox University Bruins with a fine rookie season, earning All-Northwest Conference Second Team honors as voted on by the league’s nine coaches.

Barnett, an academic sophomore but athletic freshman from Jefferson, Ore., and Jefferson Christian High School, won the most matches (10) of anyone on the team this season.  In singles, he was 6-9, going 4-6 at No. 1 singles and 2-3 at No. 2.  In doubles, he was 4-11 while playing with Nick Jenness and Scott Budreau at different times, posting a 3-11 mark at No. 2 and 1-0 at No. 3.

Barnett’s 4-6 record at No. 1 singles ranked 9th among all conference players who had four or more matches at that position, and his 2-3 record at No. 2 was 10th among all who played there.

In being named to the All-Conference Team, Barnett becomes the first Bruin to earn All-NWC honors since Tyson Hunter was named a First Team selection in 2005.

George Fox finished the season at 1-16 overall and 0-16 in the conference, placing ninth.  Six of seven roster members are expected to return next season, however, providing a nucleus on which to build an improving team.

Conference men’s tennis award winners included Jeff Northam of NWC champion Whitman College as Coach of the Year, Joel Trudel of Pacific Lutheran University as Player of the Year, and Andrew Murakami of Willamette University as the Sportsmanship Award winner.
