MTEN: GEORGE FOX 9, C. OF IDAHO 0 - Bruins Blank Coyotes in New Coach’s 1st Match

BEAVERTON, Ore. - New George Fox University men's tennis head coach Neal Ninteman picked up his first career win in his very first try as the Bruins swept the College of Idaho Coyotes 9-0 in the season-opening match for both teams, a non-conference contest, Saturday night here at the West Hills Racquet Club.

Ninteman, who is also an assistant professor of engineering and mathematics at George Fox, has stepped in for long-time coach Rick Cruz, who decided to cut back on his duties as coach of both the men's and women's tennis programs to give more attention to his business operations in Hillsboro, and now coaches only the women's team.

Talented Ecuadorian brothers Juan and Pedro Munoz got the Bruins off on the right foot with an 8-6 win over Mark Malmstrom and Max Nguyen in the No. 1 doubles match.  Scott Barnett, a Second Team All-Northwest Conference player as a freshman last year, picked up where he left off by teaming with newcomer Matthew Gardner for an 8-2 win over the Coyotes' Jaron Tietsort and Thomas McMahon at No. 2 doubles.  Nick Jenness, the Bruins' only senior, and rookie Luke Pritchard combined to defeat C of I's James Collet and Joel Hernandez 8-2 in No. 3 doubles.

In singles, Barnett knocked off Malmstrom 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1, Pedro Munoz defeated Mguyen 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2, Juan Munoz downed Tietsort 6-3, 6-3, Jenness won a tiebreaker over Hernandez 6-4, 6-7, (10-6) at No. 4, Gardner dropped McMahon 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5, and Josh Williford completed the George Fox sweep with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) win over Collet.

Next up for the Bruins is their first Northwest Conference match of the season on Friday at Lewis & Clark College, starting at 3:00 p.m.  The College of Idaho plays again Sunday at Pacific University at 10:00 a.m.
