USTA/ITA NORTHWEST REGIONAL: Eight Bruins Entered in Three-Day Tennis Bash

NEWBERG, ORE. - Eight George Fox University men’s tennis players, including two-time All-Northwest Conference selection Scott Barnett, will compete in the USTA/ITA Small College Northwest Regional Tournament this Saturday-Monday, Sept. 25-27, hosted by Willamette University at three different sites around the Salem, Ore., area.

Barnett, a junior, is the No. 5 seed in the singles bracket.  Seeded ahead of him are Mark Magdaong of Linfield College at No. 1, Joshua Wong of Willamette at No. 2, Jeff Tolman of Whitman College at No. 3, and Michael Baumgartner of Willamette at No. 4.  Also competing for the Bruins are sophomore Matthew Gardner, junior transfer Peter Brown, and five talented freshmen: Justin McClain, Josiah Jackson, Paxston Magaway, Andy Tweet, and Nolan Staples. 

The brackets feature 64 athletes in singles and 30 entries in doubles.  Matches will be played at the Willamette Tennis Courts (on campus near the intersection of Bellevue and 12th St.), the Salem Tennis and Swim Club (4318 Lone Oak Road SE), and The Courthouse Tennis Club (1379 Madison St. NE).  In case of rain, some or all of the matches will be moved to The Courthouse.

Action gets under way Saturday at 8:00 a.m.  The first two rounds of singles and the first two rounds of doubles are scheduled to be completed on Saturday, along with the first round of consolation singles.  On Sunday, matches are slated to start at 9:00 a.m., with the round of 16 and the quarterfinals in singles, and the quarterfinals and semifinals in doubles.  The schedule for Monday will begin at 8:00 a.m. and will feature the semifinals and finals in singles, as well as the finals in doubles.
