USTA/ITA REGIONALS: Aldrich Advances a Round but Bruins Ousted from Regionals
WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Shawn Aldrich was the only George Fox University player to advance an additional round on the second day of play Sunday in the United States Tennis Association / Intercollegiate Tennis Association Men’s Pacific Northwest Fall Championships here at Whitman College, but in the end, all the Bruins were eliminated.
Aldrich, after winning two rounds on Saturday, took out Matt Tesmond of Whitman 6-2, 6-0 in the “Round of 16”, but was himself ousted by Conor Holton-Burke of Whitman 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. The Bruins’ other player in the “Round of 16”, Justin McClain, was knocked out by Andrew La Cava of Whitman 6-1, 6-3.
In the lower bracket following first and second-round losses, Andy Tweet and Collin Hammagren were Bruins who advanced to the third round, but results of that bracket were still awaiting an update. Tweet was to have played Sunday at 10:00 a.m. against Dan Cotten of Pacific Lutheran University and Hammagren was to have gone at 11:00 a.m. against Oliver Groot of Lewis & Clark College.
In doubles, two Bruin teams advanced on Saturday to the quarterfinals, but both were eliminated Sunday. Preston Mann and Andrew Milton dropped an 8-3 decision to James Rivers and Sam Sadeghi of Whitman, while Peter Brown and McClain fell 8-3 to Colton Malesovas and Steven Roston of Whitman.
The Whitman Tournament is one of nine NCAA Division III regionals taking place around the country, featuring 64-player singles brackets and 32-team doubles brackets. Tournament winners in both singles and doubles will advance to the ITA / USTA National Small College Championships, slated for next month in Mobile, Ala.
