George Fox Freshman Lilley Named Bruin Men’s Athlete of the Week for Sept. 17-23
NEWBERG, Ore. - By advancing further than any other George Fox University player in the USTA / ITA Small College Northwest Regional Men's Tennis Tournament held Sept. 21-24 at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton, Ore., Chris Lilley has been named the Bruin Men's Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 17-23.
Lilley, a freshman from Bellevue, Wash., was the No. 14 seed out of 64 individuals in the singles heading into Saturday's action. He opened with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Will Cooper of Willamette University, and defeated Whitman College senior Matt Tesmond 6-4, 6-4, on Saturday, advancing to the "Sweet 16". In the quarterfinals on Sunday, he notched an impressive 6-3, 6-2 win over the No. 3 seed in the tournament, Troy Zuroske of Pacific University, before being stopped in a 6-1, 7-5 loss to Giancarlo Battaglia of Pacific in the semifinals.
In doubles, Lilley teamed with Justin McClain to reach the quarter-finals with two wins on Saturday. They defeated Will Huskey and Alexander Noyes of Whitman 8-6, and Shrujan Kalidindi and Colin Yamaguchi of Willamette 8-2. On Sunday, they were eliminated by Noah Lee and Steve Roston of Whitman. Lilley thus finished his first college tournament with a 5-2 overall record.
The George Fox University Bruin Athlete of the Week Award for both men and women is presented throughout the sports seasons to recognize and honor outstanding athletic achievements and records by Bruin student-athletes.
