A Winning Tradition
NEWBERG --- For the third time this season, George Fox senior Spencer Watanabe has been named the Northwest Conference Men's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week.
Watanabe, a senior from Duvall, Washington, earns his third honor and the Bruins' fourth honor of the season. Watanabe was perfect on the weekend, as he posted big wins against No. 11 Whitman. He teamed up with last week's NWC Student-Athlete of the Week, William Leach, and the pair put on a show with an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Watanabe then cruised at the No. 1 spot in singles with a 7-5, 6-3 win over last year's NWC Player of the Year, Zach Hewlin. He was just as dominant against Whitworth the next day, recording a 6-2, 6-3 over Jake Bethards in No. 1 singles. Watanabe and Leach took care of business at the No. 1 spot in doubles with an 8-2 victory.
The Bruins are 6-1 on the season and 3-1 in the Northwest Conference. Their next match is against Austin Saturday, March 17 at 4 pm.
