A Winning Tradition
WALLA WALLA --- The No. 33-ranked and No. 3-seed George Fox men's tennis team provided a thrilling matchup against No. 31-ranked and No. 2-seed Lewis & Clark in the opening match of the Northwest Conference Tournament, Saturday afternoon. The Bruins narrowly fell to the Pios in a 5-3 final score.
It was a gutsy performance across the board for the Bruins, who had to climb out of an early hole from doubles play. Spencer Watanabe and Will Leach were spectacular for the Bruins at the No. 1 spot, taking the early point for the Bruins by an 8-3 score. The Pios grabbed two points to end doubles with close calls at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Alex Namba and Payton Namba dropped the No. 2 spot, 8-5, and Keaten Baker and Jonah Wafula fell 8-4 at the No. 3 spot.
With the 2-1 deficit going into singles, the Bruins were able to record an early point from Baker at the No. 4 spot. Baker won his match 6-1, 6-0 over Pios' Ramez Attia to tie the match up at 2-2.
The Pios answered with wins at the No. 2 spot and No. 6 spot to retake their lead, 4-2. Needing just one point to close the match out, Watanabe would make the Pios work for their win.
The senior pulled off a 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 victory at the top spot to give the Bruins their final point of the match.
Lewis & Clark went on to close out the match with a win at the No. 5 spot.
