Press Release / Results (M&W)
COMING UP: Linfield Icebreaker in McMinnville on Mar.
7
Fri.-Sat., Mar. 6-7 - Linfield Icebreaker, McMinnville,
Ore.
The 2009 track and field season “officially” gets
under way for the Bruins in the Linfield Icebreaker this
weekend. Last Saturday’s Frank Haskins
Invitational, a dual match with Linfield, counted for Northwest
Conference qualifying but was ahead of the NCAA’s March 1
date for national qualifying, and those marks could not be used for
NCAA purposes.
The Linfield Icebreaker will have a limited number of events
Friday, with the men’s and women’s hammer at 2:00 p.m.
and the 10,000 meter races at 7:00 p.m. (women) and 8:00 p.m.
(men). Saturday’s full slate begins at
9:00 a.m. with several field events, with the running events slated
to begin at 11:00 a.m.
The next events for the Bruins will be the Northwest Conference
Preview at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore., on Saturday,
March 14.
COACH JOHN SMITH:
John Smith (George Fox '96), a former Bruin
All-American in the decathlon, is now in his third year as the
men's and women's cross country and track and field head coach at
his alma mater. He was an assistant coach for the Bruins for eight
years before replacing long-time coach Wes Cook, who retired after
19 season at George Fox. Click here for the complete bio on Coach
Smith.
BRUIN BITS:
* Krebs, Dillow Get NWC Men’s Honors; Stam, Johnson
HM for Women
Nate Dillow in men’s track and Joel
Krebs in men’s field were named the Northwest
Conference Men’s Student-Athletes of the Week for Feb.
23-Mar. 1, while Irene Johnson in women’s
track and Beth Stam in women’s field
received honorable mention for Northwest Conference Women’s
Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances in the Frank
Haskins Invitational, a dual meet with Linfield, in Newberg on Feb.
28.
Dillow captured both the 110 hurdles and 400
hurdles in NWC qualifying times. He defeated
five other runners in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.68, and
three others in the 40 hurdles in 58.12.
Krebs, the 2007 NCAA Division III national javelin
champion, won the javelin against seven other throws with a
distance of 193-10.5 (59.09m), a mark that would surpass the 2009
NCAA Division III provisional qualifying standard of 188-8, but
meets before March 1 are ineligible for qualifying consideration by
NCAA rules.
Stam also beat the NCAA provisional mark of 126-4
in the women’s javelin with a throw of 134-8.5 (41.03m),
finishing second in a field of six.
Johnson won two individual races - the 100 in
13.17 against four others, and the 100 hurdles in 15.56 against two
other competitors - then raced for the Bruins’ winning 4x100
meter relay team that posted a time of 50.45.
