IRVINE, Calif. – Joel Krebs, who won the NCAA Division III national championship in the men’s javelin for George Fox University in 2007, took a major step toward an opportunity to win it again when he hit a provisional qualifying mark during the University of California-Irvine Spring Break Collegiate Classic Friday-Saturday, March 20-21, here at Anteater Stadium.

Krebs recorded a throw of 197-9 (60.28m) to place third overall in the event.  His mark is the best in the Northwest Conference thus far and is the third-best in the nation. He was the only Bruin to meet a national qualifying standard during the meet.

Competing against a field composed primarily of Division I athletes, the Bruins did not win any individual events, but did post several marks that either qualified for the first time for the Northwest Conference Championships or improved their NWC standings.

Two other Bruins posted conference first-place marks.  Garrett Blizzard moved into the top spot in the men’s 200 meter dash with a time of 22.87, while Cindy Walsh improved her first-place standing in the women’s long jump with a leap of 17-6 (5.33m).

In other women’s events, Marlee Zakrevsky took over second place in the NWC hammer with a throw of 143-9 (43.81m), Lizzy Alaimo is now fifth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.77, and Rachel Meis moved into seventh in the 200 meter dash with a 27.31.

For the Bruin men, John Zaganiacz took over third in the conference in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 57.82, Dakari Kongela reached third in the 100 meter dash with a mark of 11.15, and David Marvin moved into 10th place in the javelin with a mark of 171-4 (52.23m).

Coming up for the Bruins to end their spring break trip is the Point Loma Nazarene University Collegiate Scoring Meet in San Diego, Calif., on Saturday, March 28, with the first events set for 10:00 a.m.
