Pia Again Leads Bruins as Team Ties for 4th in Willamette Grass Course Run

SALEM, Ore. - For the second time in as many meets, freshman Joseph Pia led George Fox University with a 10th-place finish, and the Bruins as a team tied for fourth in the 7,085-meter men’s cross country race at the Willamette University Grass Course event Friday afternoon here at Bush’s Pasture Park.

The Bruins collected 102 points to tie with Pacific Lutheran University.  Host Willamette took the race with a perfect 15-point score as a Bearcat took each of the top five scoring places.  Linfield College was second with 61 points, and Pacific University was third with 95 points.

Pia, who led the Bruins with an 11th-place finish in the first race of the season last Saturday at the BYU-Hawai’i Invitational, was 10th overall out of 58 runners and ninth for team scoring with a time of 23:39.77.  Following him were Kyle Dreibelbis, who was 22nd overall and 18th for team scoring, with a 24:24.45, and Allen Cassel, who was 24th overall and 19th for scoring with a 24:37.39.  Rounding out the Bruins’ scoring were Mike Calavan (25:36.41, 34th/27th) and Tyler Magill (25:49.35, 37th/29th).

Also running for George Fox were Chad Sutfin (26:24.44, 45th) and Justin Holman (27:56.70, 55th).

Willamette’s Leo Castillo was the winner in 22:43.86, almost 10 seconds ahead of teammate Stefan Redfield’s 22:53.31.

NEXT: George Fox will host its own Bruin Alumni Race, a 5K event for current and former college men and women, next Saturday, Sept. 25, at 10:30 a.m. at the Champoeg State Heritage Area near St. Paul, Ore.  This will be the only home meet of the season for the Bruins.
