CONCORDIA 1, GEORGE FOX 0: Cavaliers Win Brilliant Pitching Duel with Bruins
PORTLAND, Ore. – An unearned run in the bottom of
the 7th inning was the only blemish on a brilliant pitching duel
between George Fox University’s Chelsea Bradely and Concordia
University-Portland’s Danielle Pulfrey, with the Cavaliers
edging the visiting Bruins 1-0 in a non-conference softball game
Wednesday afternoon here at Delta Park.
Bradely (1-4) suffered the hard-luck loss despite allowing only
two hits and no walks while striking out three.
Pulfrey (6-0) was equally impressive in lowering her earned run
average to 0.29 for the season, scattering three hits and walking
one with 13 strikeouts.
Pulfrey permitted only one runner as far as second base, in the
5th inning when Kerstyn Tsuruda and Becka Doyle had
singles. Bradely had one tough inning in the 3rd
when Becca Gawlista led off with a double and advanced to third on
a ground out, but the George Fox southpaw escaped by getting a
grounder to short with Gawlista holding and a foul out to catcher
Tsuruda.
Concordia broke through after two were out in the
7th. Tina Garcia reached on an error in left and
pinch-runner Ashley Watson advanced to third on an error on Robin
Gawlista’s grounder to short. The game
came to a sudden conclusion when Watson scored on a passed ball.
The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was canceled due to
rain and deteriorating conditions on the Delta Park
field. No decision about a possible makeup game
has been made.
George Fox (1-4) enters Northwest Conference play this weekend,
visiting Pacific Lutheran University Saturday and the University of
Puget Sound Sunday. Twinbills both days start at
12:00 noon. Concordia (10-1) is off until March
13, when the Cavs will visit Seattle University for a single game
at 3:00 p.m.
