WBSK - WHATS BRUIN: Now Ranked 9th/10th, Bruins Aim to Start New Winning Streak
* Upcoming Games:
- Sat., Dec. 5, 7:00 pm - vs. Lewis-Clark State College in Newberg, Ore.
NEWBERG, Ore. - With their school-record 36-game winning streak now history, the George Fox University women's basketball team (4-1) will try to get a new streak going when the Bruins host the Lewis-Clark State College Warriors (7-2) this Saturday, Dec. 5, at 7:00 p.m. in the Wheeler Sports Center/Miller Gym.
After going 32-0 en route to last year's NCAA Division III national championship and winning their first four games this season, including a 59-46 neutral-site win over Chapman in Thousand Oaks, Calif., on Nov. 27, the Bruins were finally upended on Nov. 29 in a 54-48 loss at California Lutheran University. Though the Bruins played their usual fine defense, holding the Regals to a .321 shooting percentage and blocking 12 shots, one short of the team record, the offense had struggles of its own as the team shot only .263 (17-57) from the field and .161 (5-31) from three-point range.
It was the Bruins' first loss since a 47-40 setback to Hope College on March 14, 2008, in the "Sweet 16" of the national tournament. As a result, George Fox slipped from 4th to 10th in this week's D3hoops.com national poll, and from 5th to 9th in the WBCA poll.
The Bruins will need to recover their shooting touch this weekend if they are to handle one of the strongest opponents on their non-conference schedule. Lewis-Clark State was ranked 16th nationally in the NAIA Division I pre-season poll after finishing 23-8 and ranked 22nd in 2008-09. The Warriors defeated both Whitworth and Whitman, members of the Northwest Conference with George Fox, in the Kim Evanger Raney Classic in Walla Walla, Wash., as part of a five-game winning streak that ended Saturday in a 75-43 loss at Western Washington. The Warriors play Friday at Linfield before meeting the Bruins. LCSC defeated George Fox 67-59 on Dec. 9, 2006, in the Wells Fargo Classic in Lewiston, Idaho, in the teams' only previous meeting.
The Warriors are led offensively by F Jasmine Stohr (14.0 ppg) and G Nikki DePeel (11.4 ppg). 6-3 P Kirsi Voshell is the top rebounder (8.0 rpg) while averaging 8.6 ppg. Rounding out the starting lineup are F Alyssa Fiero (8.9 ppg, 7.0 rpg) and G Kenna Reiter (8.0 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 2.8 apg). The Warriors average 67.0 ppg and allow 56.4 ppg while shooting .456 from the field and blocking 5.4 shots per game.
Ticket Information: Tickets for Saturday's game are $5 for adults, $3 for non-GFU students with an ID, and $1 for seniors 55 and up and children 12 and under. There are no advance ticket sales.
