NEWBERG, Ore. – After 23 days without a real game in which to sink their teeth, the nationally-ranked George Fox Bruins finally return to action next week with three games against top-flight competition in the Surf ‘n Slam Classic at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, Calif., Monday-Thursday, Dec. 27-30.
The Bruins will meet Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham on Monday and St. Mary’s of Indiana on Tuesday, followed by a day off. They will conclude the tournament with a game on Thursday against a team to be determined. There are six teams participating, divided into two pools, and the final pairings will be based on where each team finishes in its respective pool. The Bruins and their first two opponents form the “Surf” Division, while the “Slam” Division includes Bethany Lutheran College, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and host Point Loma Nazarene.

In the latest poll by the USA Today / ESPN / Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, released on Dec. 20, George Fox (6-2) has climbed to 13th with 86 points, the same position they were in last week. In the latest D3hoops.com poll of Dec. 20, the Bruins rose from 15th with 248 points to 14th with 289. The Bruins have not played since Dec. 4 ... Amherst College, (11-0), which won last year’s Final Four consolation game and finished 32-1, remained No. 1 in both polls ... Among other NWC teams, Puget Sound was 18th with 167 points in the D3hoops.com poll, while Whitman received 3 points and was listed among “others receiving votes”. UPS had one point and Whitman 7 in the WBCA poll and were included among the “others” ...

* Records: Gordon Ties Mark for Best FG Pct. with One Miss
In the Bruins’ 83-45 win at Pacific Lutheran on Dec. 4, Keisha Gordon went 9-10 from the field en route to 27 points, tying the George Fox record for best field goal percentage (.900) in a game with a miss. Hannah Munger nearly equaled that in the same game, going 8-9 while scoring 17 points. The record was previously set by All-American Katie (Greller) Lacey, who was 9-10 vs. Menlo on Nov. 27, 1999. The Bruins’ record for best field goal percentage without a miss is shared by Lacey, who was 6-6 at Cascade on Nov. 21, 2000, and Darby Cave, who was 6-6 vs. Lewis & Clark on Jan. 26, 2002.
* Bruins Extend Winning Streaks vs. NWC Foes with PLU Win
With their win over Pacific Lutheran on Dec. 4, the Bruins extended their winning streaks vs. NWC opponents to 37 in a row in regular-season games, and to 40 in a row in all games including conference tournament and post-season action. The Bruins’ last loss to an NWC team in regular-season games only was a 45-35 setback at Lewis & Clark on Feb. 15, 2008. The last George Fox loss to a conference team of any kind was a 62-52 reversal at Puget Sound on Feb. 29, 2008, in the finals of the Northwest Conference Tournament. The Bruins shared NWC championships with Puget Sound in 2007 and 2008, then won outright titles in 2009 and 2010 with perfect 16-0 conference records.
* Bruins Look to Extend String of 17 Winning Seasons in a Row
Last year’s 28-3 overall record extended the Bruins’ string of winning seasons to 17 in a row. The streak began in 1993-94 when Sherri Murrell, now the coach at Portland State, went 16-12 in the first of her three years at George Fox. The last 14 came under Scott Rueck, who is now the coach at Oregon State.

Center Hannah Munger ranked 7th in blocked shots per game (3.9), 32nd in field goal percentage (.554), and 40th in rebounds per game (11.0) ... He led Southridge to five large-school state championships in his last six years, received 12 league or state Coach of the Year awards during his career, and was the 2006 MaxPrep National Girls’ Basketball Coach of the Year ...
