* Recent Games: Bruins Stay Unbeaten with Wins at Linfield, vs. PLU

Jan. 21 - George Fox 75, at Linfield 52

Megan Arnoldy scored a career-high 23 points and the defense held the Linfield Wildcats without a field goal for nearly 16 minutes in the second half, leading the Bruins to a 75-52 win Saturday in McMinnville.  The game was nip-and-tuck through the first 10 minutes, neither team holding more than a three-point lead.  The Bruins began to pull away with a 10-0 run midway through the half, Arnoldy hitting two free throws and a rally-capping three that made it 27-18 with 9:19 left.  The Bruins took a 40-29 lead into the break, but Gretchen Owens, the NWC’s leading scorer, pulled the Wildcats within eight at 47-39 at the 17:40 mark.  It was the last field goal the ‘Cats would make until there were 44 seconds left in the game.  Over the next six minutes, the Bruins out-scored the ‘Cats 15-0, led by a pair of threes by Arianna Mohsenian, to build a 62-39 margin with 11:50 left, and salted the game away with another big run of 9-0 to take a 28-point lead of 71-43 with five minutes to play.  Arnoldy hit 10-15 from the floor and hauled down a team-high eight rebounds.  Mohsenian hit 6-9, including four threes, for 16 points, and Breezy Rinehart-Young added 10.  Hayley Cusick handed out four assists, and Dacia Heckendorf made six steals.

Jan. 22 - at George Fox 71, Pacific Lutheran 51

Keisha Gordon scored 11 consecutive points in a 14-0 run at the end of the first half, sparking the third-ranked Bruins to a 71-51 win over the hot-starting Pacific Lutheran Lutes Sunday in Newberg.  The Sunday game, a rarity for the Bruins, was the makeup of a postponement from Friday, when severe winter weather had prevented PLU from leaving the Puget Sound area.  The Bruins built an early 11-6 lead on a pair of three-pointers by Arianna Mohsenian and one by Megan Arnoldy, but the Lutes stormed back by hitting eight of their first 11 shots and taking a 23-17 lead with 8:30 to go.  PLU scored to take a 27-23 lead with 5:42 left, but it was the last points the visitors could muster as the Bruins strung together 14 unanswered points to close the period and take a 37-27 halftime lead.  Hayley Cusick extended the Bruins’ run to 16 in a row with a jumper to open the second half before PLU broke its scoreless streak, but the Bruins used a 9-0 run to stretch their lead to 19 at 52-33 with 10 minutes and cruised to victory.  Gordon finished with 18 points and Arnoldy added 11.  Hannah Munger had nine rebounds, four players had three assists apiece, and Gordon picked up five steals, running her career record total to 255 as the Bruins forced 23 PLU turnovers.

With a 17-0 record through games of Jan. 22, the George Fox Bruins remained No. 3 in both NCAA Division III national polls.  In the D3hoops.com poll, the Bruins got one first and 579 points, one more point than the previous week.  The top three teams all held their places as defending national champion Amherst (17-0) was first with 22 firsts and 620 points, followed by Chicago (16-0) with two firsts and 598 points. Fellow Northwest Conference member Lewis & Clark (16-1) remained 8th with 426 points.  In the USA Today / ESPN / Women’s Basketball Coaches Association poll, the Bruins received 185 points for the third straight week, trailing Amherst (5 firsts and 197 points) and Chicago (3 firsts and 194).  Lewis & Clark remained 7th with 151 points.

* Bruins Secure 19th Straight Winning Record in Win over Willamette

With their 95-34 win over Willamette on Jan. 13, the Bruins guaranteed themselves a 19th consecutive winning season.  The string began in 1993-94 in the first year under Sherri Murrell, now the women’s basketball coach at Portland State. Following three winning seasons with Murrell, the Bruins added 14 more winning seasons under Scott Rueck, who left in the summer of 2010 for the women’s basketball position at his alma mater, Oregon State. The 2010-11 Bruins finished 25-6, their 18th straight winning season, under first-year coach Michael Meek.  Including this year’s 17-0 record, George Fox has gone 381-127 (.750) during that 18-years-plus span from 1993-2012.

* Bruins Stretch Home Streaks vs. NWC Opponents to 44 in a Row

With a home win over Pacific Lutheran on Jan. 22, the Bruins extended their home court winning streak against Northwest Conference opponents in all games, including post-season NWC and NCAA Division III Tournament games, of 44 in a row at the Wheeler Sports Center’s Miller Gym. The last time the Bruins lost at home to a conference team was 51-48 to Puget Sound in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on March 3, 2007. The Bruins have also won 44 straight regular season-only games vs. the NWC in Newberg since a 55-51 setback to Linfield on Nov. 28, 2006.

NWC Poll: Bruins Favored to Win 6th Straight League Title

After winning or sharing each of the last five Northwest Conference championships, and with five starters returning, it is perhaps little wonder that the George Fox Bruins are favored to win their sixth straight NWC title as predicted in a pre-season poll of the league’s nine coaches The Bruins picked up seven of nine first-place votes and tallied 70 of 72 possible points in the poll. Lewis & Clark, which shared last year’s regular-season conference crown with George Fox, was second in the poll with 59 points and picked up the other two first-place votes.
