Dec. 2 - George Fox 54, at Whitman 53
Hannah Munger scored 17 points and Keisha Gordon added 15 to climb into fourth on the all-time George Fox scoring list as the Bruins survived a serious scare from the Whitman Missionaries. The Bruins led by as many as 12 points in the first half and led 29-19 at the break, but could not put the Missionaries away, though they never trailed. The Bruin lead was one at 48-47 with 4:26 to go when Megan Arnoldy hit two big baskets around a putback by Munger, boosting the Bruin lead to seven at 54-47 with 2:35 left, but it was the last points the visitors could muster as the home team made one final run. Whitman cut the lead to 54-53 and had the ball last with a chance to win, but tough Bruin defense forced a tough three-point try that missed as time ran out. Munger and Gordon were the only players in double figures for the Bruins, and they also had seven rebounds apiece.
Dec. 3 - George Fox 81, at Whitworth 69
Keisha Gordon scored a game-high 23 points and Hannah Munger posted her fourth double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds as Bruins equaled their highest-scoring output of the season in a win over the Whitworth Pirates. After falling behind 5-0, the Bruins rallied and went up 29-18 on a drive by Keisha Gordon, but the Pirates got within eight when Jamie Lyons hit a jumper to make it 31-23 George Fox with 7:29 left. The Bruins then held the Pirates scoreless for over five minutes while they ran the lead to 40-23 with a 9-0 run and led 40-25 at the half. The Bruins opened the second half with a 6-0 run anbd later added an 11-0 run to clinch the win. Gordon hit 9-11 field goals with a pair of threes and 3-3 from the line while Munger hit 8-11 field goals and 3-5 free throws. Carrie Myers added 10 rebounds, Gordon picked up five steals, Arnoldy handed out four assists, and Munger blocked three shots. Breezy Rinehart-Young also had a blocked shot, the 74th of her career, which ties her for ninth all-time at George Fox.
* Gordon Takes BAA Award, HM for NWC Honors for 2nd Straight Week
In leading the Bruins to a 2-0 start in Northwest Conference play, George Fox wing Keisha Gordon had two fine games that have earned her the Bruin Athletic Association Women’s Athlete of the Week award and honorable mention for the NWC Women’s Basketball Student-Athlete of the Week honor for Nov. 28-Dec. 4, the second week in a row for her to achieve those accolades.
Gordon, a senior from Vancouver, Wash., had 15 points on 5-12 field goals and 5-9 free throws, with 7 rebounds, 5 steals, and 2 assists as the Bruins won a hard-fought 54-53 decision at Whitman on Dec. 2. * Polls: Bruins Remain No. 3 in 2nd D3hoops In-Season Rankings
With two conference wins last week to run their record to 6-0, the George Fox Bruins maintained their No. 3 ranking in the second in-season NCAA Division III national poll of Dec. 6 by D3hoops.com. After receiving two first-place votes and 574 points last week, the Bruins this week got one vote for first and 578 points. The top three teams all held their places as defending national champion Amherst College (5-0) was first with 20 firsts and 618 points, followed by the University of Chicago (6-0) with four firsts and 599 points. Fellow Northwest Conference member Lewis & Clark College (7-0) moved up from 18th to 15th with 244 points.
In the USA Today / ESPN / Women’s Basketball Coaches Association pre-season poll, the Bruins received 156 points. Amherst was first with four votes for the top spot and 172 points, followed narrowly by Chicago with three firsts and 171 points. * Bruins Aiming for 19th Consecutive Winning Season
Under first-year coach Michael Meek, the 2010-11 Bruins finished 25-6, their 18th straight winning season, and will be out to make it 19 in a row in 2011-12. The Bruins’ string began in 1993-94 in their first year under Sherri Murrell, now the women’s basketball coach at Portland State. Following three winning seasons with Murrell, the Bruins added 14 more winning seasons under Scott Rueck, who left in the summer of 2010 for the women’s basketball position at his alma mater, Oregon State. George Fox went 364-127 (.738) during that 18-year span from 1993-2011.
* Bruins Take Home Streaks of 41 in a Row vs. NWC into New Season
Entering the 2011-12 season, the Bruins have a home court winning streak against Northwest Conference opponents in all games, including post-season NWC and NCAA Division III Tournament games, of 41 in a row at the Wheeler Sports Center’s Miller Gym. The last time the Bruins lost at home to a conference team was 51-48 to Puget Sound in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on March 3, 2007. The Bruins have also won 41 straight regular season-only games vs. the NWC in Newberg since a 55-51 setback to Linfield on Nov. 28, 2006.
NWC Poll: Bruins Favored to Win 6th Straight League Title
After winning or sharing each of the last five Northwest Conference championships, and with five starters returning, it is perhaps little wonder that the George Fox Bruins are favored to win their sixth straight NWC title as predicted in a pre-season poll of the league’s nine coaches The Bruins picked up seven of nine first-place votes and tallied 70 of 72 possible points in the poll. Lewis & Clark, which shared last year’s regular-season conference crown with George Fox, was second in the poll with 59 points and picked up the other two first-place votes.
