ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT: Munger Named to D-III Academic All-District First Team
NEWBERG, Ore. – A leader for the George Fox University Bruins both on the court and in the classroom, 6-5 center Hannah Munger has been named to the 2011-12 Capital One / CoSIDA NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Academic All-District VIII First Team as voted on by district members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Munger, a junior from Newberg, Ore., has compiled a grade point average of 3.78 through her first five semesters at George Fox. She is an Elementary Education major.
Munger has been a three-year starter for the Bruins, who are 21-0 and ranked third in the nation in the D3hoops.com and USA Today / ESPN / Women’s Basketball Coaches Association polls. She ranks third in the nation in field goal percentage (.600), eighth in blocked shots (3.7 bspg), and 24th in double-doubles with 11, giving her 36 in her career. She leads the Northwest Conference in blocked shots and field goal percentage, and ranks second in rebounding (10.0 rpg) and fourth in scoring (14.6 ppg).
During the season, Munger has reached double figures in scoring 17 times and rebounds 11 times, with highs of 25 points at Concordia (Ore.) and 18 rebounds vs. Northwest (Wash.). She has posted five or more blocks in a game nine times, with a high of eight vs. Northwest and at Concordia. On the George Fox career lists, she ranks second in blocked shots (277) and field goal pct. (567), fifth in rebounds (777), and ninth in scoring (1,190 points).
Munger was selected to the All-NWC First Team each of her first two seasons, and last year was named the NCAA Division III West Region Player of the Year and Third Team All-America by D3hoops. She was a pre-season Second Team All-America choice by D3hoops this year. The Bruins have gone 74-9 to date in her three seasons, and reached the ‘Elite 8’ of the NCAA National Tournament in both 2010 and 2011.
Along with Munger, other members of the D-III Academic All-District VIII First Team are Courtney Carroll of the University of Redlands, Kayla Waskow of Coe College, Kate Nielsen of Simpson College, Camille Marie-Lidd of Cornell College, and Laura Hilby of Buena Vista University. All six are automatically entered on the ballot for the Academic All-America Team, which is selected by the CoSIDA Academic All-America Committee from First Team members of the eight districts.
This is the second year for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program to be sponsored by Capital One. New this year to the program is a breakdown of the former “College Division”, which lumped all schools outside of the NCAA Division I into one category, into separate teams for Division II, Division III, and a new College Division which includes NAIA and other four-year organizations, Canadian teams, and junior and community colleges. District VIII of CoSIDA consists of all sports information directors and other college sports media relations personnel from the Great Plains states, Iowa, and Louisiana west.
