WGF: NWC SPRING CLASSIC - Bruins Hold Down 3rd Place after Day One of Spring Classic

NWC Spring Classic Results - Day 1

YAKIMA, Wash. - Still within striking distance of front-running Whitworth University after a first-day score of 341, the George Fox University Bruins stand in third place, 10 strokes off the pace, after Saturday’s opening-round action in the Northwest Conference Women’s Golf Spring Classic here at the Apple Tree Golf Course.

Whitworth carded a four-player score of 331 on the par 72, 5,847-yard course to lead the second-place University of Puget Sound, which shot a 337, by six strokes.  Next comes 10th-ranked George Fox, followed by Linfield College at 343, Pacific University at 361, Whitman College at 380, Pacific Lutheran University at 401, and Willamette University at 457.  Lewis & Clark College has three individuals competing but not enough for a team score.

Brianna Nap had the top score for the Bruins on the first day with an 82, tied for third with Natalie Nakamine of Puget Sound.  Sarah Askin and Jill Westendorf each shot 86 and are tied with three others for 10th, while Mandy Cameron had the Bruins’ fourth counting score with an 87, tied for 15th.  Kelsey Morrison shot an 88 to tie for 17th, and Abby Mann carded a 91 and is tied for 23rd.

Emily Travis of Whitworth, with a 4-over-par 76, has a four-stroke lead over Sophie Corr of Linfield with an 80 for medalist honors.

The NWC Spring Classic, which concludes Sunday, counts as one quarter of the total score in determining the conference champion, with the NWC Fall Classic also counting as a quarter and the NWC Championship coming up Apr. 24-25 as one half.  George Fox won the Fall Classic.
