Bruins Work at The Children's Course on Serve Day

GLADSTONE, Ore. - As a part of George Fox
University's annual "Serve Day", the Bruin men's and women's golf
teams spent the day (Wednesday, Sept. 9) working at The Children's
Course in Gladstone, Ore. The Children's Course is a part of The
First Tee project, which is geared toward teaching life skills and
values to children through a golfing atmosphere. Over 3,000
children participate in programs at the Children's Course and over
12,000 lessons are given each year.
The GFU student-athletes and their coaches contributed to such work
projects as painting parts of the main clubhouse and the learning
center, cleaning tables and chairs, sanding tee boxes, and
separating buckets of golf balls donated from many sources. They
also conducted a golf clinic for a group of home-schooled children
who came to the course for a couple of hours.
George Fox's "Serve Day" is an annual event the second Wednesday of
each September in which the entire Newberg campus shuts down for
the day and all faculty, staff, and students disperse throughout
the community and region for service projects. Some 1,500
volunteers were organized into groups which visited 72 sites and 50
individual homes to serve. In its 11 years, nearly 12,000 students
and employees have volunteered in excess of 120,000 hours for Serve
Day projects, and more than 200 organizations or churches have been
assisted.
