Bruins to Again “Swing for the Cure” at GFU Women’s Invitational Saturday

NEWBERG, Ore. - In conjunction with their season-opening GFU Women's Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 19, the George Fox University women's golf team will be supporting this year's Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, as they "swing for the cure" with a project to promote breast cancer awareness and fund cancer research.

UGuardU, a new digital monitoring network company based in Wilsonville, Oregon, will pay $5 to the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation for each par that is made by a George Fox player ($10 for birdies).  George Fox will have their full team on hand, so eight players are hoping to play well in this unique fundraiser.  The golfers also will be wearing special "pink" hats to raise awareness at the tournament.

Women's golf coach MaryJo McCloskey thought of the fundraiser three years ago, as she has a close friend who has been battling breast cancer, and two other golfing friends were recently diagnosed with the disease.

"The most important thing is to get the message out that it can happen to any of us, and as women athletes out in front of a lot of people, we have the opportunity to show support for the cause and that we care," says McCloskey.  "All women everywhere need to be aware of the risk factors, and need to be their own proponent in the fight against breast cancer.  This is just our way to raise a little money for the cause and remind women to stay informed, do monthly exams, and have mammograms on a regular basis."
