GFU WOMEN’S INVITATIONAL: Bruins Take Top Four Spots to Win Own Tournament

NEWBERG, Ore. - Familiarity with one of the toughest courses in the state that happens to be their home venue paid off for the George Fox University women's golf team as the Bruins won the GFU Women's Invitational by 22 strokes Saturday afternoon here at the Chehalem Glenn Golf Course.

George Fox's score on the 18-hole, par 72, 5,844-yard course was 336, well ahead of runner-up Linfield College's 358.  Willamette University placed third with a 440, and Lewis & Clark College came in fourth with a 468.  Corban College entered two golfers who played as individuals, with no team score.

Brianna Nap carded a 37-39=76 to win medalist honors, the best score by a Bruin golfer at Chehalem Glenn in the four years of existence for the program.  She was followed by teammates Mandy Cameron with a 43-38=81, Kelsey Morrison with a 43-42=85, and Jill Westendorf with a 43-43=86.  Westendorf was playing as an individual and not as one of the six golfers eligible to contribute to the team score, however, or the George Fox team score would have been even better.

"Jill was ill while we were playing for positions before the tournament and didn't fare very well at the time," noted Bruin coach MaryJo McCloskey.  "If I'd known she was this well, I might have played her higher!"

The fourth score that counted for George Fox was a 44-50=94 by Sarah Askin.  The best score other than a George Fox player was 89, good for a fifth-place tie, by three Linfield Wildcats: Brinn Hovde (42-47=89), Brittany Johnston (42-47=89), and Katie Kilborn (46-43=89).

The next event for the George Fox team is the Pacific University Invitational Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 26-27, at the Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks, Ore.  Tee time is 12:00 noon both days.
