WGF: PACIFIC INVITATIONAL: Bruins and Nap Both Win Pacific Tourney Going Away

Final Results

BANKS, Ore. - Pulling away from the pack both individually and as a team, medalist Brianna Nap led the George Fox University Bruins to their second straight women's golf tournament championship as the Pacific University Invitational concluded Sunday afternoon here at the Quail Valley Golf Course.

Coming off a season-opening win in their own GFU Women's Invitational last Saturday, the Bruins shaved 15 strokes off their first day's score and won by 18 strokes with a two-day score of 340-325=665.  The Sunday score was the best 18-hole score ever for a Bruin team.  Linfield College was the runner-up with a 346-337=683, followed by host Pacific with a 370-358=728, Northwest Christian University at 380-351=731, and Willamette University at 404-401=805.

Nap, who held a two-stroke lead after the first round, shot a three-over-par 75 on the 5,880-yard course to finish with an 80-75=155.  Ashley King took second, five strokes back, with an 82-78=160, while Brittany Johnston of Linfield was third at 82-80=162.

Three George Fox players tied for fifth.  Mandy Cameron carded an 85-86=171, Abby Mann an 87-84=171, and Kelsey Morrison a 90-81=171.  Sarah Askin (88-85=173) and Whitney Clunes (86-87=173) tied for 10th, while Jill Westendorf (89-87=176) placed 12th.

"It's always tough the second day when you have a small lead after the first day, as the tendency is to try to hold on and control shots," noted Bruin coach MaryJo McCloskey.  "I was really impressed by how all our players stayed relaxed and focused when the pressure was on, particularly on the back nine which tends to play more difficult."

The next action for the Bruins is the Whitman College Invitational on Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 3-4, at the Wildhorse Resort Golf Course in Pendleton, Ore. Tee times are set for 12:00 noon on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. on Sunday.
