WGF: WHITMAN INVITATIONAL: Nap Paces Bruins to 3rd Tourney Win in Three Tries

Day 1 Results / Final Results

PENDLETON, Ore. - Continuing their outstanding fall play, the George Fox University Bruins captured their third women's golf tournament in as many tries behind medalist Brianna Nap with a 22-stroke win in the Whitman College Invitational held Saturday and Sunday here at the Wildhorse Resort Golf Course.

Leading Whitworth University by a mere four strokes (335-339) after the first day of play on the par 72 course, the Bruins shot a 328 on the second day to finish with a score of 663.  Whitworth fell off to a 346 on Sunday and came in second at 685.  Following in order were Pacific University (353-380=733), host Whitman (387-378=765), and Lewis & Clark College (435-415=850).

Nap took a seven-stroke lead with a 76 on the first day and maintained that margin to the end, taking her third straight individual title with a 76-81=157.  Teammate Mandy Cameron was the runner-up with an 83-81=164.  Other Bruin scores included an 84-86=170 (6th) by Kelsey Morrison, a 93-83=176 (8th) by Sarah Askin, a 94-83=177 (9th, T) by Abby Mann, and a 92-93=185 (13th, T) by Whitney Clunes.

"This tournament win was a real team effort - Everyone helped," said Bruins coach MaryJo McCloskey.  "The conditions the first day were miserable with rain, wind and cold, and I think the high temp was around 48 or so, but there was also wind chill, making it feel colder.  That's why Bri's score on Saturday was so amazing!  Almost everyone else picked it up and improved their scores on Sunday when the weather improved.  We're taking it one tournament at a time and looking forward to Monterey next weekend to see how we play against a few D-II schools."

The Bruins are acting as tournament hosts for the DT Women's Monterey Invitational at the Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside, Calif., on Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 10-11.  Tee times are 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and 12:00 noon on Sunday.
