WGF: DT MONTEREY INVITATIONAL: Bruins in 2nd Place after First Day in Cal Event

SEASIDE, Calif. - If the George Fox University Bruins are to make it 4-for-4 in women's golf tournaments this fall, they have a lot of ground to make up after finding themselves down by 18 strokes at the end of the first day of play in the DT Women's Monterey Invitational on Saturday here at the Black Horse Golf Course on the Monterey Peninsula.
The Academy of Arts University from San Francisco posted a four-player score of 330 on the par 72, 5,848-yard course, with George Fox second at 348 and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges third at 364. Dominican University of California dropped out of the event at the last minute due to a player illness.
"It's a very tough course and the Academy of Arts is a good NCAA Division II team," noted Bruin coach MaryJo McCloskey. "We made some mistakes around the difficult greens, but we learned and we are ready for the challenge Sunday. The team is excited to get back at it tomorrow."
Jill Westendorf tied for the best nine-hole score on Saturday with a 39 on the back nine and finished with a Bruin-leading 46-39=85, standing tied for fifth on the leader board. She was followed by Brianna Nap with a 41-46=87 (7th). Sarah Askin (46-42=88), Kelsey Morrison (43-45=88), and Abby Mann (45-43=88) are tied for 8th. Mandy Cameron rounded out the Bruin scores with a 49-41=90 (11th, T).
Crystal Faith Superal of the Academy of Arts carded a 40-40=80 to take the individual lead, with teammates Laura Huertas (42-41=83) and Lyra Yoe (44-39=83) tied for second. Claremont's best score was turned in by Brittany Isobe with a 41-44=85, tied for fifth.
The tournament concludes Sunday, with tee times scheduled for 12:00 noon.
