Bruins on The Golf Channel at the President's Cup

NEWBERG, Ore. - While traveling in the San Francisco Bay area to play in the DT Women's Monterey Invitational Oct. 10-11, the George Fox University women's golf team got a chance to build some unexpected memories - a visit with several professional golfers during the President's Cup Tournament and a brief appearance on the Golf Channel.

Several Bruins were standing with other spectators as a number of golfers filed past at the President's Cup, and Phil Mickelson took a moment to say "Hi" and toss a golf ball to the George Fox golfers, who were adorned with their pink hats which they wear occasionally during matches to promote their "Swing for the Cure" efforts on behalf of the Susan G. Komen Foundation.  The moment was captured on video by the Golf Channel and can be seen on the YouTube link above (In the video, Bruins left to right are Jill Westendorf, Sarah Askin, Brianna Nap, and Kelsey Morrison.)

"What the public didn't see," said George Fox coach MaryJo McCloskey, "was that the players actually got to talk to Phil the night before, as well as Stewart Cink. And as they were intently listening to Stewart, Michael Jordan came up behind him!  More excitement came the next day, as they spoke to Justin Leonard and had the opportunity to see other premier American golfers up close.

"The chance to meet these golfing greats and the kindness shown toward them from these legends left a tremendous impression on our team.  Many people have also told us they witnessed that great moment of the golf toss to the pink hat girls (a color near and dear to Mickelson's heart, who' is dealing with his own wife's breast cancer diagnosis)."
